Understanding Natural Variation in Furniture

Stone and wood are defined partly by their variation.

Veining can change across a stone surface, while differences in grain, tone and pattern give wood its individual appearance. As a result, furniture using natural materials may not reproduce every detail shown in product photography exactly.

That variation is part of what gives these materials their character.

It is also worth considering how a material will sit alongside the rest of an interior. Pronounced veining can become a focal point, while quieter surfaces allow surrounding furniture and finishes to take greater prominence.

When choosing a piece, look beyond the exact placement of a marking or grain. Consider the broader tone, movement, texture and relationship with the materials already in the room.

The result is furniture that can share the same design while retaining subtle individuality from piece to piece.
